Carriage Return
I’m still battling that cold; only, I don’t know if what I’m battling is a new cold, or if the one I had before decided to take a turn for the annoying. I like having a good time. Constant sneezing and runny noses are not it, especially the runny nose.
Let’s focus on something that’s totally radical (I could whine for an hour about how much this cold sucks). What is this totally radical thing? Technology! I was sitting at my desk yesterday (I got a good round of editing in for The Year is Now).
“Bloop! Bloop! Bloop!” The tablet on my desk suddenly started making a noise. I picked it up, opened it, and saw that a relative was trying to skype me, a video call.
I remember when the idea of a video call was something only found in sci-fi and hopeful predictions of the future. Computers were just merging into the consumer marketplace when I was a kid.
“Typed or handwritten?” was a common question after teachers handed out reports. I would always cringe when it had to be typed (imagine that!). Carriage return, anyone?
I also remember when a representative from one of the local computer companies came to my school and talked about the advances they were developing and how “one day, computers will be able to fit in your hand!” Fifth grader me laughed at the idea of a computer that could fit in your hand.
Well, snarky fifth grade me, I own a computer that fits in my pocket. It makes phone calls, takes pictures, calculates tips, and much more. This may seem like nothing to the generation after mine, but it means a lot to me! It has been fascinating to experience technology as it advances. It has come so far!
